Sharon Walker, SWAA Artist

Sharon Walker grew up on a farm in southern Saskatchewan, the only girl in a family of six siblings. She attended the College of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan and upon graduation moved with her husband Vince to his family farm at Brooksby, Saskatchewan where she still resides.

“I have drawn all my life and worked at something art related whenever I could. Early on the drawing passion developed into a desire to learn more about art in general and to produce it.”

Along with this passion came the need for subjects to draw. Procuring drawing information from Walker’s own photographs made photography very important and though the subjects became varied, wildlife ruled.

Over the years photography also fulfilled the need to “do” Art, since photography “could be classified as a quick fix art form.”

Walker became involved with the University of Saskatchewan Long Distance Art program and took a variety of art classes over the years. In the midst of these classes and raising a family Walker was also introduced to woodcarving. “

With access to many classes in carving and a very supportive carving group in Melfort, I added woodcarving to my list of art related endeavours.

In 2002 I met wildlife sculptor Rich Loffler from Lumsden, who introduced me to sculpting wildlife from life using oil-based clay. Since then sculpting has become my art form of choice and I had my first sculpture, a bull elk, bronzed in 2012.

"I still draw, paint, occasionally carve, and of course take pictures.”
